There are a number of advantages of using fiberglass for auto body parts over the conventional metal parts that are used in many vehicles. For starters, fiberglass, which is a mixture of plastic and glass fibers is a very strong but still quite light material, so the reduction in the overall weight of the vehicle can be achieved without sacrificing a whole lot of strength and thus safety in the event of an auto accident. This is why you sometimes see fiberglass being used on retrofitted import vehicles. In many cases this application is actually a slightly different material called carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber is as strong as fiberglass, but offers more rigidity while maintaining a relatively low weight, making it ideal for performance applications. The biggest downside to carbon fiber is that the strands that make up the composite material are considerably more challenging to manufacture. This means that the price is also quite a bit higher than conventional fiberglass. However, the balance of strength and lightweight material simply cannot be beat in many situations. So, if you are into performance upgrades and racing you should definitely consider the carbon fiber component if the price isn’t unbearable.

Carbon fiber is extremely strong, typically up to ten times stronger than steel. That is why it is used in a variety of applications where low weight and high strength are required, for instance, in golf club drivers. At our body shop, we make sure to use the best materials in all of our collision repair services. We can work with both fiberglass and carbon fiber.

At Black & White Auto Body, we offer fiberglass repair as part of our full service collision repair services as a professional body shop and auto repair center. We can repair issues with fiberglass or carbon fiber bodies, including dents, dings, holes and other problems. If you have a vehicle that needs some attention after an accident and it has a fiberglass or carbon fiber body component, bring it to us at Black & White Auto Body and we will make sure that we get it fixed correctly and for the right price. Our collision repair services are state-of-the-art and nobody knows more about fiberglass repair than our technicians.

It’s one thing to get your car a car wash every month or so, but to really get all of that dirt and grime out of all the nooks and crannies in your new ride, you will want to give it the full auto detailing treatment. Auto detailing combines a good, deep clean with polishes, waxes and shampoos in order to really make your car shine. With a good auto detailing, you will pore over every single detail of your vehicle’s interior and exterior and make sure that all of it is perfectly clean and polished to perfection.

Many people who really want their car to look its best will opt for a professional auto detailing service such as the one that is offered by Black & White Auto Body. We offer auto detailing that will go beyond what is typically possible at home without specialized tools, so if you are looking for the best possible representation of your vehicle then you should definitely stop in and we will make sure that you get the best auto detailing in Colorado Springs.

However, if you want to do-it-yourself we can offer some tips to make sure that you make your car look its best and really get that deep clean done well.

  1. Clean your air ducts in order to get rid of the dirt, dust, mold and other nasty things that tend to build up. This will also improve your car’s odor without the need to purchase an artificial scent to cover up the old musty smells.

  2. Utilize a hand wash for your car in order to get all of the dirt and grime off more effectively than with an automated wash. This also gives you some time to really appreciate your car and to make sure that you clean every inch of the body.

  3. Focus on the polish and wax in order to really make your car shine (literally!) This is one of the most important aspect of auto detailing, because it will make the most visible difference in the appearance of your vehicle. Our auto detailing in Colorado Springs makes sure to focus on the paint job, because there is no better way to take years off your vehicle’s appearance.

  4. Focus on the little things like window and tire shine. This will take your car’s appearance from great to positively head-turning. It is the essential part of auto detailing–focusing on the little details.

  5. Apply a rain protection like Rain-X on your windshield to avoid your windshield getting as dirty. This wax-like substance will also make it much easier to see in very stormy or rainy conditions.

Collision repair is a growing industry and the newest technologies continue to revolutionize what is possible with auto body repair. At your Colorado Springs body shop, Black & White Auto Body, we are excited by the new developments and innovations in the industry and can’t wait to see more of these technologies on display at the upcoming SEMA trade show that will be held in this November.

SEMA is one of the largest automotive trade shows in the world and it has featured a large section of the show devoted to collision repair technologies and new products. It looks like the most recent news is that the auto body repair section of the show will be expanding for 2013. Last year there was nearly 330 exhibitors at the show, with two full sections featuring auto collision exhibitors and products. This year that number is expanding, with an extra 20,000 square feet of exhibition space for the collision repair sections of the trade show.

For many people, restoring old cars is more than just work, it is an enjoyable pastime and a passion. There are many vintage car enthusiasts who take great pleasure at finding an old car in less-than-perfect condition and then doing the auto restoration themselves. The goal of any good auto restoration is to bring an older vehicle to its original condition so that it can be restored to its former glory.

Auto restoration fanatics are motivated by a combination of nostalgia and the love of digging into cars. They are usually true gearheads, who love to bring older cars back, sometimes in better shape than they were originally. At our body shop, we have a number of these fanatics who not only possess the passion, but also the professional expertise to make old vehicles better than new again.

At Black & White Auto Body, many of our body shop technicians are just these kind of gearheads. They grew up taking apart and repairing their own vehicles and now armed with years of experience and schooling they have become professional auto restorers.

Auto restoration is a complex and time consuming task, but it is very rewarding to many people to see an older vehicle resurrected and sometimes brought back from the dead. Many vehicles have been salvaged from scrapyards and literally brought back from the brink of a rusty death to become beautiful shining works of art–part vintage and part new.

Nothing can restore an old vintage vehicle back to its former glory like a full professional auto restoration. At Black & White Auto Body, we have a fully-equipped body shop with qualified technicians that have the experience and skills necessary to provide a wide variety of auto restoration services, including full restoration of vintage automobiles. If you have a car that you are looking to get restored. Bring it in for an estimate on our professional auto restoration services.

The upcoming I-CAR conference is set to experiment with a new format and feature a number of presentations on upcoming car technology and how it will change and revolutionize the collision repair industry. I-CAR is a recognized leader in industry training for auto body and repair shops, but the conference will have programming that will cater to more than just the repair professionals. It will be attended by insurers, educators, suppliers, vehicle manufacturers and more.

At your Colorado Springs body shop, we’re always trying to stay ahead of the curve and up-to-speed on any new developments in the industry, especially technological innovations and improvements that can help us improve the quality of collision repair services so that we make sure that our customers only get the very best.

The new I-CAR conference is going to draw a lot of attention for its specific focus on new technology. It’s interesting that this focus comes on the heels of news about auto-pilot technology that Tesla Motors is considering licensing from Google and utilizing in upcoming car models. We’ve written blog posts about these developments before, but this in particular is something that has the ability to significantly impact safety and reduce collisions on the road (provided that the systems are safe and are implemented correctly).

A lot of the conference will also probably feature new technologies that relate specifically to collision repair. This is something that will be of interest to us at Black & White Auto Body, your Colorado Springs body shop. The event will feature several discussions on new car technology and collision repair developments. It is scheduled to get underway on July 24th and will bring a lot of experts and industry leaders together to discuss new developments in the industry and what the future holds for the collision repair business.

Since I-CAR is focused mostly on collision repair education, there will likely be a large component of the show that is focused on educating companies and individuals on the upcoming developments that will impact their business the most. Some interesting discussions are planned that will likely bring a lot of insight about the future of the auto repair business. As your Colorado Springs body shop, we are certainly excited to hear the developments.

A stunning new development in the field of car technology has come to light as Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, has noted that his company’s cars may include auto-pilot technologies in the near future. We have co vered the various technologies that may lead to this kind of development on this blog previously, including Google’s self-driving cars which are already driving around the roads with minimal issues in Arizona and elsewhere. But, this is the first time that the CEO of a car company has actually announced plans to integrate this kind of technology into a production model vehicle.

Car accidents are overwhelmingly caused by a failure to pay adequate attention to the road or to accurately respond to a variety of situations. This means that any kind of auto-pilot or autonomous driving technology could have profound effects on reducing automobile accidents and thus minimizing auto body damage, necessary dent repair and injury accidents.

Musk’s actual statement was that he would consider integrating Google’s technology into his vehicles. Tesla vehicles are already recognized as some of the most technologically advanced in the industry. Tesla only makes electric roadsters, most of which are high performance and feature a number of other technological features, including enormous touch screens which provide nearly all the controls for the vehicle. Musk has come under fire in the past for promising things that later turned out to be impossible and for producing vehicles that were sometimes marred by technological and mechanical issues.

The possibility of integrating auto-pilot technology into vehicles means that the Department of Transportation will be pushed to take a serious look at how to integrate self-driving vehicles into the normal traffic flow. If done correctly, this could significantly reduce accidents and improve traffic congestion. At Black & White Auto Body, we can tell you that the possibilities are impressive, but there are also concerns that these devices must be fool-proof or they may actually cause additional safety issues. Fixing vehicles and providing dent repair after collisions is our business, but we all know that the most important part of an accident is ensuring the safety of all of the parties involved.

While the possibilities are exciting indeed, Black & White Auto Body knows that in order to ensure proper safety there will need to be a whole set of tests and additional regulations as we look to reduce the number of accidents, increase safety on the roads and reduce the need for dent repair through this new technology.

The Philanthropic Foundation of the car insurance giant GEICO (which interestingly stands for Government Employees Insurance Company) has announced the recipients of its most recent set of scholarships for collision repair students. The foundation gives away a number of scholarships each year to the students of auto repair schools across the country.

This year, GEICO has announced that they will be giving away scholarships to four different students from four different states. The recipients will be Kyle Wright of Chantilly STEM Academy in Chantilly, VA, Olivia Barszczewski of Alfred State in Alfred, NY, Shannon Braswell of Sarasota County Technical Institute in Sarasota, FL, and Gerardo Olivera of Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA. Each of these students will receive $1,000 in school scholarships as well as a $1,000 tool grant.

The collision repair students will be able to use the money, which does not need to be repaid, to further their education and improve their skills. As your Colorado Springs collision repair shop, we know just how important it is to develop the next generation of experts in collision and auto repairs. The technical education and finesse that is required to accurately perform all of the needed tasks within the trade of collision repair is significant and there will always be a demand for highly-skilled technicians who are knowledgeable in auto repairs and body work.

The GEICO Foundation put out a statement about their support of these particular students, noting the importance of developing the appropriate skills and education in auto repairs and body work. The foundation put out a statement saying that these students showed particular promise as leaders of the next generation of collision repair experts and that the foundation was happy to support their education and their future achievements.

If you aren’t familiar with fiberglass, you might be interested to learn exactly what it is composed of and what its uses are. Fiberglass is a plastic-like material that is actually composed of glass fibers (hence the name) that are embedded in plastic resin. The result is a material that is both strong and light and thus is desirable for a number of different applications where both low weight and high strength are desirable. One of these applications is automobile bodies.

There are a number of cars that have fiberglass bodies. Not all of them are entirely fiberglass, but many have fiberglass components. In fact, fiberglass is a popular material to replace various body panels with for customizing imports for street racing. The reason is the low weight can improve handling and increase acceleration.

They are typically associated with performance machines although they can be used in any type of vehicle.

There are millions of car crashes in the US every year. Oftentimes, we all think that we’re safe drivers and an auto accident can’t happen to us, but the fact is that even if you are the safest and most aware driver on the road, you can’t account for what other drivers are doing all the time. Sooner or later you will likely have to deal with the hassle and chaos of an auto accident. It’s not fun and it can even ruin your whole day, but unfortunately that’s part of the risk that we take in driving our cars everyday. However, when that unfortunate day does come, you can take a few simple steps to make sure that everything goes smoothly and you avoid any extra hassle.

1.       Record everything – As soon as you realize that you’ve been in a collision, you should immediately stop to make sure that everyone in the vehicle is safe and injury free. If someone does require medical assistance, call 911. Otherwise, if you don’t have any injuries you will want to make sure that you record all the pertinent information about the incident by jotting notes down on a piece of paper and taking pictures of the damage. Note what you were doing, how fast you were going, the direction of the impact, the other driver’s actions and the damage to both cars. All of this information will be useful for filing the police report, making sure that any auto repairs get done correctly, and also for ensuring that the insurance claim gets put in properly.

Whether you had a minor fender bender or worse, make sure to follow these simple steps to get everything sorted out quickly. (photo by chris_ford_uk via Flickr)

2.       Speak with the other driver and exchange information – Make sure that you get the license plate information, name, address, phone number and insurance company and policy number from the other driver. Also, be prepared to give this information out yourself. Try not to get in an argument over whose fault it is. Let the police and insurance companies sort that out. Your main goal is to get all the info so that you can get the collision repair done as soon as possible and get your vehicle back to normal operation.

3.       Be cautious when dealing outside of insurance and legal means – If you were just in a minor fender bender and you both decide to take care of the auto repairs yourselves without getting insurance and police involved, that may be a realistic option. Just know what the law is. In many areas it is illegal not to report an auto accident, even though doing so will likely get you a citation and fine. Also, realize that if you decide to sort out the costs for collision repair yourselves, you will need to rely on the other person to uphold their end of the bargain. It could be more difficult to get your insurance company involved after the fact. So, for this reason you should be very careful when taking this route.

After an accident you just want to get any auto repairs taken care of as quickly as possible and get everything back to normal. If you have any other questions or need a free estimate, bring your vehicle into us at Black & White Auto Body and we will be happy to help you further.
