With the rest of electric cars, it’s becoming more and more important for car consumers to be knowledgeable about the maintenance difference between a gas run automobile and a green engine. The primary problem about maintaining your electric car will be being able to locate a mechanic or body shop that has knowledge outside of traditional internal combustion engines. Luckily, the dealership where you originally bought the car should have a mechanic on board that is trained to repair electric drive motors.
However, it is in your best interest to shop around your town to find a body shop outside the dealership, because depending on your warranty the dealer may actually be more expensive than a local mechanic. Luckily, electric car motors are generally fairly simple to repair, as they contain a tenth of the moving parts that internal combustion engines do, and auto dent repair costs are often comparable.
Electric car motors don’t need to run on gas, don’t require investments in oil filters, emissions tests, and are beginning to offer higher and higher MPG. Instead, electric cars work by harnessing magnets. Some electric car manufactories claim that you will save way more money on body shop visits and gasoline in the long run because their cars are up to 10x cheaper a mile to drive than traditional gas fed engines. Minor body work, such as auto dent repair should cost no additional money on most electric cars. Some of the nicer models are made out of lightweight frames such as carbon fiber, or in cases of accidents will need fiberglass repair performed, which may be slightly more expensive.
But if you are careful driver, hopefully you will never have the need for fiberglass repair or auto dent repair. Where your main expenses are going to come in from owning an electric car is battery replacement. Most batteries are guaranteed to last over 100,000 miles, but can have replacement costs from anywhere in $5,000-$15,000 dollars depending on the model. Luckily, costs as electric car technology are going down. And if you are planning on purchasing one, the standard five year warranty should last long enough for most of your local body shop mechanics to learn how to replace electric car motors.
